About this deal

Overall the book tries hard to be a gangland thriller but is really just a hash of everything that has gone before it. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice.

It stars Frankie James – like Barnes, an author surrogate for O'Sullivan himself – a smart, capable guy from a colourful background, who is jostled from his day job running a snooker club so he can investigate a murder for which his hapless younger brother has been implicated. Unlike the majority of first in series, there wasn't too much evidence of scene setting to be found. Fairly functional crime thriller in which a young nightclub owner has to prove the innocence of his younger brother who has been accused of murder. Criticisms, given this is a first effort I don’t want to appear to harsh so reasons for lost star is clumpy dialogue, this can be worked on and I’m sure we’ll see an improvement in the future and secondly some typos. The choice to set it in the mid-nineties is also a slightly strange one – "everyone was into Blur and Oasis these days, but [Frankie] still reckoned the old tunes were the best" – and the trappings of the era are vaguely gestured toward, rather than buttressed by necessary plot points. Yes, as I have already mentioned, Frankie does punch above his weight on quite a few occasions but then he also screws up a near equal amount of times so, again balanced. Since turning professional in 1992, O'Sullivan has clocked up an incredible number of awards and trophies, including the UK Championship, the China Open, the Regal Championships, the Benson and Hedges Masters and the British Open. I will at this point just mention that the majority of the negativity that I saw about the book was the amount of swearing. PRESS ASSOCIATION on RUNNING When he starts talking about snooker and his rivals, he is fascinating.

Unfortunately his little brother is easily led, and this time has landed them both in a whole lot of bother. Ronnie takes us to 1990s Soho where Frankie James sees his brother Jack arrested for the supposed murder of the fiancée of the son of one of London’s most feared faces. Some readers might raise an eyebrow at the use of the label ‘athlete’ in the previous sentence, but I think here it is accurate — the new Masters champion Mark Allen once revealed in a mid-session-ask-the-stars-time-filler that his least favourite food was ‘vegetables’ and his favourite ‘takeaways’, but Ronnie O’Sullivan ran 40-45 miles a week before a dodgy heel forced him to cut down. And things are about to get a whole lot worse when Frankie’s brother Jack is accused of killing a bride-to-be. His life isn’t going that well, and when his younger brother Jack shows up at his door covered in someone else’s blood Frankie’s life gets a lot worse.
