About this deal

Bear was with Jordan when Alex first arrived in Medora. Instantly, the three become best friends and hang-out together all the time. Bear was always being the honest and less cheeky one of her friends. Farewelling her parents was never easy and this time was worse than most. Heading into her new boarding school, sixteen-year-old Alexandra Jennings sighed with resignation as the tormenting began immediately. But when she went to the headmaster’s office to fulfill the enrolment, the room she entered had an instant impact – it wasn’t a room. How did that happen? How was she in Medora? And how was she going to return to her own world?

chemistry, society and culture, Species distinction, Core skills (supernatural giftedness by the way), medical science, history, etc. With all the high tech, I wasn't sure where archery and equestrian skills came in, but the rest made sense. The entire series is one of my favorite young adult fantasy series ever, the books aren't stand alone so starting here with the first book is wise. Its not quite right for the youngest listeners(there is a little bit of violence and war in this series) but its a series that would fit well as a family listen on a long road-trips or as a Sunday activity. There was never a dull moment in this book, it was every bit as exciting, addictive and enthralling as Akarnae, with so much additional wonder and awe! It was so amazing reading about the worlds within Medora and all of their features, such as when Alex and her friends find their way into Meya, such a dazzling and breathtaking city! It’s here where our heroes make the acquaintance of some new faces, my favourite being Roka – who indeed is the brother of the villainous Aven! Where Aven is definitely devilishly charming and frankly terrifying (but truly one of my new favourite villains, Roka is inquisitive and curious and caring, truly wanting Alex and her friends to be safe, but knowing that Alex is connected to Aven in ways, and Alex knowing Aven’s plans to reclaim the throne of Meya, just wow!). There was not one moment where I didn’t feel on edge throughout this! Potential applicants must be 14 to enrol for Akarnae. You stay for 5 years there and visit home every holidays or weekend depending on your permissions. Though if Akarnae appreciates you enough they will take you in for an extra 2 years, these students are called Apprentices. After the enrolling process, you are given a lollipop which decides your class levels for the rest of the year. There are 5 different levels - Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta and Epsilon. After a year, you will either upgrade to a higher level of your classes, be downgraded down to a lower level or stay at the same level. This depends on how you perform in classes. There are many classes taught, but the few unique to Akarnae are Combat taught by Karter, Equestrian Skills taught by Tayla, PE taught by Finn, Gift Development taught by Professor Marmaduke, Chemistry taught by Fitzy, History taught by Doc, SOSAC (Study Of Species And Cultures) taught by Casper Lennox, Species Distinction taught by Varin, Archery taught by Maggie (secretly Mayra) and Medical Science taught by Professor Luranda. There is also a Med-Ward, which is run by Fletcher. One of the most appealing aspects of The Medoran Chronicles is the adventure. Comparable to the Harry Potter series, it appeals to young adult and mature middle grade readers as the storyline is morally uncomplicated and doesn't rely on a romance to develop characters or further the storyline which really is a breath of fresh air. I loved the attraction blooming between Kaiden and Alex and hoping the third book explores a potential romance between the two.Lynette Noni is an absolute powerhouse of Australian YA fantasy: young readers are in Harry Potter-level fervour about the Medoran series, and she engages with her community with such warmth and genuine enthusiasm. She's who I want to be when I grow up." — Steph Bowe, author of Girl Saves Boy and Night Swimming And then I read the book and now I'm totally here for everything else as well. Authors' need to stop writing about awesome worlds that I can't visit and schools that I'd actually want to attend. One of their subjects is purely about horses!! My sore after riding equestrian ass is so jealous. I could just not read these kind of books, but I have pretty much no self control whatsoever so authors' need to take one for team and just stop writing about these freaking amazing worlds. My poor heart can't take the injustice of only reading about them. And please don’t confuse my phrasing with predictability or boredom. It would be like saying that Cassandra Clare is predictable and boring with her awesome perfect books. I know, right? Crazy. Do you know what I've always wanted in a fantasy novel? Technology. And this freaking had it. So many fantasy books seem to be set in historical (for us, i'm sure it's modern day for the characters in the novel) times, and it's just so nice to read something different. And it's still clearly a fantasy and not sci-fi. Love It!

As Alex's second year at Arkanae begins things don't go as planned. Somehow she winds up taking part in the trial to enter the mysterious Hunter's Stealth and Subterfuge class, and what is even more crazy is that she passes doing what no other student has ever been able to - complete the trial. Akarnae is the first book in the Medoran Chronicles, precedes Raelia and was released in February, 2015. There's still way too many good looking people but these characters are so easy to fall for because of the dynamics they bring to the story. I love the friendships and particularly the teamwork, which gives our heroine a great support network instead of the 'only I can do this' complex so many teen fantasy heroes end up with. Also Aven. The bad guy and at this stage the main reason why I am reading this book, I’m predicting or rather hoping that he gets more brutal. While waiting for him to reappear, Alex attends Akarnae Academy, Medora's boarding school for teenagers with extraordinary gifts. She soon starts to enjoy her bizarre new world and the friends who embrace her as one of their own, but strange things are happening at Akarnae, and Alex can't ignore her fear that something unexpected... something sinister... is looming. Lynette Noni is a marvellous and inventive storyteller, whose books are absolutely impossible to put down. I can’t wait to see what she comes up with next!” — Sarah J. Maas, #1 New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of the Throne of Glass and A Court of Thorns and Roses series This concludes my nonsensical babbling inspired by my love of this series which is only growing stronger with re-reads. For sense, please read my original review, below.

A few weeks after the incident with Aven, Alex asks Kaideen a few questions about Medora's military and Wardens, and during the conversation sparks fly. I’ve come to love Lynette Noni and her stories like few things in these past couple of months. It is a combination of multiple factors that make her books a second home to me, nothing different from what I would expect from her. I enjoyed this much more than I thought I would. It's got a few things that didn't quite work for me especially early on. Loved the last part though so that raised it up to 4 stars. It's been a while since I finished so I'll be a bit vague on the specifics. It's also one of those books you want to go in not knowing much about I think. The climax was just weak. There was some information shared but it didn't feel meaningful. Alex didn't use almost anything she had learned at the school; her friends that she had spent the most of the book with, didn't contribute to the climax; the world is supposed to be very advanced, but no adult came to the rescue. Hmm. A YA Fantasy novel set at a boarding school for 'gifted' kids. Where have I read this plot before??!

At no point does Alex question ANYTHING about the world she's stumbled into. And she never has any issues in terms of language or academics or even really more than one or two moments of "whoa, cool" When day and night combine and fight against one enemy then dark and light shall meet mid-strike and set the captives free I also adored Alex, her subtle defiance, her easygoing outlook on life and the loyalty and banter that she shares with her best friends, DC, Jordan and Bear. Although we didn't really see much of Bear in this one, her other best friends took a primary role in the book which was really wonderful to see. This series really places a focus on platonic friendships and it is so refreshing. Jarvis's office is the first building in Akarnae Alex ever entered. It is run by Jarvis. This is where most students go if there are problems or other needs. It is mentioned that Jarvis' office is open 24/7 but not many students go after curfew unless it is an emergency.
