About this deal

In our How to Paint Everything series, we take a look at different armies of the Warhammer universe, examine their history and heraldry, and look at several different methods for painting them. With the release of Engine War, we’re taking a look at the towering mechanical warriors of the the fallen households, Chaos Knights. Who Are the Questor Traitoris? Painting Chaos Knights isn’t incredibly different from painting Imperial Knights; the models are the same size and scale with similar components. Chaos Knights will be a bit more complicated from a painting standpoint owing to having more infernal/chaos details on them, while Imperial Knights will require more flat surfaces. Chaos Knights will also require more conversion work, particularly if you’re painting and modeling War Dogs and Tyrants. More on those in a bit. WhiteOutMouse’s Method

Imperial Knights have noble houses of knights, Chaos Knights have fallen houses of their own. There are six of these in total – 3 Iconoclast and 3 Infernal. House Herpetrax Harbingers of Dread. The new dread rules represent the effect Chaos Knights have on the battlefield, darkening skies as warp storms creep in and their enemies are driven mad with fear. These aura-like abilities let you customize how that affects the battlefield and they’re pretty strong. Mashing the head on was pretty easy. While I’m no green stuff expert, I was able to fashion some connective tissue using a modeling knife pretty easy and likewise I added a tongue to the mouth to replace the weird triple tongue bit that the Slaughterbrute normally has. Credit: Robert “TheChirurgeon” Jones Your Datasheets are Good : You get access to some of the most efficient and effective vehicle datasheets in the game. Brigands can and will carry this faction to all of their wins and the other datasheets are no slouches either. Favour of the Dark Gods. Dedicating your knights to one of the Chaos Gods is just the coolest thing, and something we’ve been waiting for. The new rules don’t disappoint, and they open up a host of awesome modeling opportunities.Any Chaos Knights detachment gains a number of abilities discussed below, and any War Dogs within the detachment gain Objective Secured (because they’re the closest thing you have to Troops). Traitoris Lances Up front, Chaos Knights get a specific exemption to the general rule that Super Heavy Auxiliary detachments do not qualify for Detachment Abilities – so a solo Knight (or trio of War Dogs) will benefit from rules in this section as long as they meet any other criteria. That’s particularly important for Combat Patrol, as without it you’d be running three War Dogs with no abilities. I start by airbrushing Iron Hands Steel over the full model, you could make probably use any similar bright steel colour as a base coat. You really don’t need a airbrush for this either, a rattle can would work too.

The short answer is Chain Cannons. These can be found on Brigands and Stalkers and sit at profile of 12 S6 Ap 1 D1 shots. It comes on cheap platforms and at the perfect strength for dealing with most infantry toughness profiles. The Ap 1 is a bit regrettable due to cover being so plentiful but the Brigand can pump that to Ap 2. The Havoc launcher can also help in this department since its D6 shots and blast and are available on every platform (yes also the Brigand, you may be seeing a pattern). The most useful part of this weapon is that they can fire indirect, but they can provide some real extra power into chaff units no matter what the context.

OPTION 1: The Smasher

Now, this was before we got those new juicy Chaos Knight kits so I had to do my own conversions. I always got a lot of inspiration for Chaos projects from the Eternal Hunt blog while also putting my own spin on things, cutting corners, and saving some money on bits. In this case, KrautScientist had already done some excellent conversion work on their own Chaos Knight. Credit: KrautScientist. Eternal Hunt

War Dog Karnivore — Close combat type armed with a Chaintalon and Slaughterclaw. [3] They are aggressively bloodthirsty, revel in causing pain, and eschew most ranged weaponry. [5] Now, however, corrupted by the Warp as they are, they have a ravenous desire for personal glory. This is accompanied by a deep loathing for the upper echelons of their Knightly household, those who lord their power over the lesser Nobles. It’s worth noting that if the points come down, there will likely be good play with the Knight Tyrant with the Panoply of Cursed Knights enhancement. Specifically the loadout to take is the big flamer and harpoon with 2 missiles up top. This provides enough avenues for devastating wounds to be a real problem and a potent overwatch threat. Right now it’s far too expensive for what it brings to the table. In addition I’ve found in a lot of match ups, it dies just as easily as anything else (Space Marines, Eldar, Tau, anything that can focus fire) so it becomes more of a liability than an asset. The second big new addition is the Favour of the Dark Gods. You can now either dedicate your Chaos Knights to one of the four Chaos Gods or mark them as undivided Chaos. For each god and Undivided are three additional abilities to choose from, which costs extra points or power.

Last but not least, we have a unique new gameplay mechanic called Harbingers of Dread. You start with the Doom ability in the first battle round, and in the second battle round, you choose whether to stay with Doom or switch to the Despair or Darkness ability. It works like this every round, but you always have to choose Doom before you can switch from Despair to Darkness or vice versa. In the fifth round, you also have to choose Doom.
