First, you’ll need to wrangle up some Monk’s Cloth fabric, at least six yards of it. Go with more just in case! I found pre-dyed Monk’s Cloth online (one less step, yay!) in the color Carob Brown. It’s difficult to find anymore. Closest thing to it now is Potting Soil, but it’s a bit darker than Carob Brown. Anyhow, measuring my height from my shoulders and my seam-to-seam length across my shoulders, I made a rough pattern and cut it larger than I thought I would need it. Always easier to hem than to add, right?

I took the Jawa costume out for a test drive at Houston Museum of Natural Science’s May the Fourth party…and had a BLAST! After that dress rehearsal, I added more foam to the mask and cut more breathing holes. Otherwise, the Jawa is ready for Brittany to wear to Comicpalooza in Houston this month and DragonCon in Atlanta this September!The corporation brought many sand crawlers to Tatooine, but abandoned them when they were unable to mine the resources they wanted. Items below are optional costume accessories. These items are not required for approval, but if present appear as described below. If adding in an accessory after initial approval, the item still needs to be submitted to local GML for approval before use. I traced the shape I wanted with tailor’s chalk, making sure that the fold was at the shoulders. Basically, the shape is straight along the sides at the top until a few inches below the armpits. From there, it flares out a bit to allow for good draping at the bottom. The skirt part of the robe should be in an A-line shape. Then I cut it all out with a cutting wheel. Easy! The robe may be sewn closed, or has an off center (to the side) opening that runs the length of the garment.

Before I finished building my first set of Stormtrooper armor, I had always planned on building a Jawa. I mean, seriously, Jawas have fun anywhere they go! Here is how I made mine. Jawas were passionate scavengers, seeking out technology for sale or trade in the deep deserts in their huge sandcrawler transports. They had a reputation for swindling, as they had a penchant for selling old equipment such as outdated faulty droids to moisture farmers. However, they were extremely passive beings, and hardly put up any resistance to colonists of their planet unlike the other natives the Sand people, instead seeing foreigners as an excellent business opportunity. Then I put all the hood pieces together. I used speaker cloth to line the hood and also for my mask cover. This is before adding the coaxial cable in the front, so the shape is kind of sloppy in this state! To achieve the correct look and maintain proper visibility, a wire or plastic reinforcement is sewn into the edge of the face opening.
