About this deal

During World War I, the United States created the Student Army Training Corps in an effort to encourage young men to simultaneously receive a college education and train for the military. [31] Students were authorized to participate beginning in the summer of 1917, [31] and training camps were held in the summer of 1918. [32] According to the Commission on Higher Education, the ROTC component of NSTP has produced 1,435,000 graduates over a ten-year period from 2002 to 2012. In comparison, the CWTS and LTS components of NSTP has produced 8,614,000 and 538,700 graduates respectively. [19] Proposals for and against mandatory implementation [ edit ] A comparison of the number of ROTC graduates against other NSTP component graduates, 2002-2012 In recent years, concerted efforts are being made at some Ivy League universities that have previously banned ROTC (including Columbia) to return ROTC to campus. [19] The Harvard ROTC program was reinstated effective March 4, 2011 following enactment of the Don't Ask, Don't Tell Repeal Act of 2010. Cadets accessing into the Army National Guard (ARNG) must work with their preferred State to find a vacancy in their desired Branch and obtain a Letter of Acceptance (LOA) from the State Officer Strength Manager (OSM). This process can take up to 30-45 days.

These formal social events are designed to allow cadets to experience the type of social gathering and military etiquette they can expect as future commissioned officers. Cadets are encouraged to bring spouses or dates. Many dignitaries are invited, including the school president, certain university officials and representatives of veterans' societies, parents and relatives. Another root of the modern ROTC program comes from the "Plattsburg Idea". In 1915, Major General Leonard Wood instituted the Citizen's Military Training Corps, the first series of training camps to make officers out of civilians. For the first time in history, an attempt was made to provide a condensed course of training and commissioning competent reserve line officers after only a summer of military training. The three-year scholarship is available for students who have three academic years of college remaining. Physical fitness training builds physical conditioning, teamwork, and self-confidence. Physical fitness training sessions are typically scheduled for approximately one-hour and the intensity, time and type of exercises varies. All ROTC Cadets must pass the Army Combat Fitness Test (ACFT) with at least the minimum (60 points) in each of the six exercises according to the standards for their age and sex. [10] Each battalion may further make its own standards. For example, a battalion may set a standard of scoring no less than 70% (10% more than the Army requires) in each category. Failure to reach the battalion standard may require increased physical fitness training on otherwise days of rest (commonly known as "incentive” or “remedial” PT).

ROTC stands for Reserve Officers' Training Corps. This is where I met my best friends here in college – Raj, Johnny, Amanda – and we’re still friends. While we were here we learned the basics on how to be a Soldier/Cadet, learned the rank structure, and what it was going to really mean to be a leader once we put on those golden bars and we commissioned in the United States Army.
