Bitsy's character, for example, fell into that 'woes is me' never pretty, good, or smart enough stereotype. I really pushed through hoping it would get better but I was simply disinterested and utterly baffled at what was going on. I also felt at times the plot was rushed mostly at the ending, I wanted more from the book and that ending left me feeling blah about it.

The plot was simple enough for a child to follow yet the aspects it deals with (poorly, I might add) are not.Overall the story had a chance at greatness, but what little glimpses of good attempts were not enough to pull this story through for me. Following on from Zombierella and Frankenstiltskin, this is the third and final book in a deliciously dark trilogy of twisted classics, written in verse by award-winning poet Joseph Coelho and illustrated by Freya Hartas. This was seriously going to be a solid 4 ⭐️ until that ending and how the romance just never played out. The book's oscillation between contrasting tones and unresolved storylines detracts from its overall impact. Ever read a book that is clearly for older teens and adults but is written in a way that reads like it's talking to children? Our team is made up of book lovers who are dedicated to sourcing and providing the best books for kids. It would be interesting, however, to explore the perspectives of boy readers as (although the author is male) the only male characters prove to be either inadequate or (literally) wooden.

This prickly tale has wicked rumours, dark magic, and, at the heart of it all, a cursed princess covered in dangerous, deadly vines… And yes, I’m afraid, wretched readers, that there is a spot of blood! Her name should have been ditzy for how incredibly dumb and lacking observational skills she was at times.

One of the reasons it was so hard for me to get into the story is because the plot is barely there until things start to pick up around the 50% mark. In this twist on the classic fairy tale, the narrative focuses on Eshe, one of the fairy godmothers and whose name means ‘life’, rather than the ‘sleeping beauty’ character, Princess Rose. And as for the happy ending, well how I believe how you judge the story will tell you a lot about yourself.

Bitsy, our “sleeping beauty”, is constantly referred to as plain or even unattractive in comparison to everyone in the kingdom. This review was written by Alastair Daniel I am a storyteller, consultant and independent scholar working in the UK and abroad, specialising in the application of oral storytelling in educational contexts. The story has mysticism, magic, unkindness but also love, estranged families, mistrust and also hope.

Peregrine was a character that I did not like at all in the beginning and was like who and what he was going to be to Bitsy, but I really liked how his character came out more and more throughout the book. I can count on one hand the number of books I've DNF'd and still have fingers to spare, so when I say I wanted to put this down a couple chapters in, you know it's bad. There did not seem to be a clear genre or target audience, so I am not sure if I just missed it or if this is how the final story is written.
