This was one of the first Rosamunde Pilcher novels that I read and I have read it multiple times over again, as I have done with many of her books. I am just getting acquainted with Rosamunde Pilcher's novels, but almost overnight I have become an ardent admirer of her work. Singing games had been played, and relay races won, up and down the assembly hall, with bean bags to be snatched and delivered to the next person in the team.

The pacing is different, pre-war moves along at a languid pace, but the book picks up speed in the second half as the years roll by. Ursula's, an English boarding school, when her parents and younger sister move to colonial Singapore.

The story left me wanting more and was a bit lacking for me to really get connected with the characters. As the Baxter Family rallies together, memories come to light in the grief-stricken hours of waiting and praying, memories that bring healing and hope during a time when otherwise darkness might have the final word. This is my second Rosamunde Pilcher novel, and it is now safe to say that she absolutely needs to be on my list of favorite authors!
