About this deal

What some may find frustrating is the actual lack of text offered; photo captions are limited to “date and location” descriptions and even the large pictures covering two pages have no caption at all. As a compendium of the often brilliant music created by ravaged souls, the book works well enough, but at this point both Led Zeppelin’s fans (and critics) yearn for more. Spitz may not have had access to the three surviving Led Zeppelin band members, but his new interviews with associates including former Atlantic Records executive Phil Carson, Peter Grant’s former assistant Carole Brown, album cover designer Aubrey Powell and Plant’s PA Benji Le Fevre form a compelling narrative filled with recollections from people who were along for the ride as well.

But Led Zeppelin fans keen to spend hours reliving the band’s career in a well-written book filled with colourful anecdotes will enjoy “Led Zeppelin: The Biography. But what I appreciate about this project is that across the array of Zeppelin books I have in my library, there are none that explode with this much photography of both the band live and of memorabilia. It includes unseen photographs and artwork from the Led Zeppelin archives and contributions from photographers around the world. The book features over 300 photographs―many seen here for the first time―of Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones and John Bonham from photographers around the world, and photographs from the band members' personal collections.

You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. Buffy Saint-Marie, who was arguably as innovative as Zeppelin in her work within folk traditions, never degraded her fans. I was so captivated that I used a roll-and-a-half of film on them and that was expensive for a school boy! As well, despite various scholarly approaches taken to the study of the band, I’ve not see anything akin to my handy-dandy timeline reference approach. The prologue is breathless and slangy, befitting the point of view of a hormonal rocker having his mind blown. If Page had his way, Led Zeppelin’s story would be told solely through the band’s music – whether studio albums or live recordings. But readers be warned: Spitz doesn’t hold back in describing the band’s antics, its displays of ego and cruelty that today’s audiences might find less than acceptable.
