About this deal

The issue with soft edges is less pronounced the further away the subject is from the lens, as greater distance results in increased depth of field at infinity. But most people will tell that the saving grace of many less-than-stellarly-built Soviet lenses is their overall image quality in relation to their cost. These are quite rare anyway, and are partly plastic, whereas all other models I’ve owned have been all metal.

So you control the aperture on the lens, and the camera sets the shutter speed required for an accurate exposure. It was really only after I went into a panic after I thought Id accidentally got rid of it that I realised how much I loved it. We'll take a look behind the scenes on some of my creative projects, completely unscientific and subjective camera, lens and film reviews and most importantly photographs! I go f/2 for portrait and most macro work and f/8 for landscapes or street photography so I can literally swing from one side to the other and adjust my Canon EOS 4000D (nice simple DSLR, nothing fancy) shutter speed and ISO depending on what I’m aiming at, or in-between if I’m taking the same shot and can’t decide how much bokeh I might like. I think it’s the different flange distance of M39 and M42 and the fact that I am using it with a M42 adapter.

A friend convinced me that having small-form, full frame camera would be an entire different way of shooting. you set that on the outer ring, then open up the aperture using the inner ring, compose, focus, then stop down the inner ring (which will stop at f/5. This isn't the best photo to showcase the sharpness from edge to edge but you can see that it's better on film than on digital. There is a pile of Soviet lenses here that cannot be sold and must be repaired (but never will be, because they aren’t worth the time).s. photo trash, apart from kodachrome i don’t think there was ever a photography product worthy of note coming from the states. And yeh a screen seems to work best with the smaller cameras, and the larger ones beg a greater level of immersion, that a viewfinder gives. I think one thing to note is that the swirl of the bokeh on the 44-2 is also slightly more pronounced (I feel) than the 44-M (having shot both on film fairly extensively I feel fairly comfortable making that assertion). This feature in particular is really what gives these lenses their reputation – especially as digital shooters have increasingly discovered their idiosyncracies.

In this blog post I want to share with you why you should consider using vintage lenses on your digital camera. The main drawback of this lens is its “preset aperture,” which can make aperture selection a nuisance. When I shoot a tight portrait – it is quite a challenge, a slight movement can get a person’s eye out of focus.

And it flares like nothing else, wiping out the contrast that is on the low side even with the sun behind you. When you're ready to take the photo you can quickly rotate this ring which will close the aperture down to your "preset" setting. Combined that with the native film-like rendering, even when used in digital bodies and you’ll produce some unique shots in no time. The Helios 44-2 is a 58mm f2 lens and during this photoshoot I am using it on the Sony A7III and Fujifilm X-T4. Paul, I’ve looked at the C mount lenses on and off for years, well, since I first bought my Lumix GF1 maybe three or four years ago now.

The 44-2 version itself has been produced in different variants and at different factories (KMZ, BeLOMO and Valdai) in the Soviet Union. I’ve never had a Helios, but I have had many similar lenses with the two ring aperture control for example. These lenses were created for the Leica M-mount so I needed to get an M mount adapter for the Sony A7.After that he has been using Canon SLR, Nikon SLR manual focus and Autofocus, Sony mirrorless crop sensor, Nikon DSLR and Nikon Mirrorless. The problem with infinity focusing might be due to Zenit’s M39 mount having a flange distance of 45. The two you referenced were written by the same person, and it’s possible that his writing style doesn’t work for you.
