Usually, it’s disappointing when you guess the ending, but the writing in this one is so good and kept me really invested in the story, despite the predictability. Little Darlings is her first novel, and has been optioned for screen by Free Range Films, the team behind the adaptation of My Cousin Rachel .

As a teenager she started work for a magazine publishing company and then went on to work as a journalist on Jackie magazine (which she was told was named after her! Finally, her husband Patrick has had enough, persuading Lauren that she has to start going out and seeing people again, which would help get her back into the normal routine of life. Lauren Tranter and her husband have just welcomed the arrival of children – twin boys, who they decide to name Riley and Morgan.

We all want to protect our children from the harsh side of the real world for as long as we can, which is why I think horror movie makers want to thrust them into all that darkness and ugliness and dial it up to 11, all designed to invoke a visceral reaction. I think it would have been interesting if there had been a DNA test because the relationship was assumed throughout the book. And when ir read it for a second time, I thought I might have grown out of the story as the characters are younger than me, but I loved them all the same. However, since plot development is crucial to the story, I'll be keeping this review on the shorter and less detailed side of things so as not to give too much of anything away. What I thought the author really did so very well was that feeling of being a new mum, she really pulled it off so well and then there were so many creepy books with the twins later on in the book – I don’t want to give away spoilers but sometimes the way they looked at people – CREEPY – and the talking!

It's sad to see how JW herself perpetuates stereotypical western beauty standards by defining 'fair' as more desirable, a theme which sadly runs often in her books. I can only imagine what it will do to someone with kids, particularly twins, whether you’re prone to superstition or not. I loved the flick between ‘is Lauren suffering from postpartum psychosis’ and the paranormal-folklore aspects of ‘is something spookier happening’. I can probably count on one hand the number of books that have managed to truly and genuinely creep me out. Destiny shows her awesome singing talent when she sings Danny's song "Destiny" and is given the last act, being the best talent.

Destiny aspires to live the life that Sunset has and Sunset wishes she had a peaceful life like Destiny. She has optimistic and goofy character, however, she is also sensitive to all of the sadness spreading around the house. Destiny, on the other hand, is an only child living on a rundown estate with a sickly but devoted mum who constantly tells her that she's really the daughter of a famous former rock star.

If Little Darlings didn't satisfy your appetite for scares, and you're in the mood to constantly be on the edge of your seat, Brenda Novak's Evelyn Talbot series - starting with Her Darkest Nightmare - is an excellent read.
