Claudia’s father is a reserved man, absorbed in his work and rarely speaking much; her mother on the other hand is still young and pretty, usually staying engaged in reading magazines and interested in the lives of celebrities and movie stars, especially those whose deaths have been mysterious or involved suicide, and in her plants which have overtaken the house so much so that Claudia describes it as a jungle.

As Damaris’s and Chirli’s lives take increasingly tragic turns, their restless natures feel increasingly broadly symbolic of the difficulty of domesticating ourselves and others, even when it serves our best interests.

I lived through the Cuban Crisis as an eleven year old boy, and I remember it quite clearly, but thankfully I did not have access to the frightening details at that time.
