About this deal
There are a ton of secondary queer characters including a fat Black trans woman, non binary character, Black gay men, I'm pretty sure that there's also a pansexual secondary character in addition to lesbian and gay characters. Though the premise of this heartwarming rom-com from Higgins (the Vow series) occasionally strains credulity, its refreshing, well-handled focus on queer women of color finding love and affirmation more than makes up for its shortcomings.
Butch influencer Kris is hoping to find true love on the show, while D’Vaughn plans to use it as an excuse to finally come out to her family.
The whole premise of the novel is a fake engagement stunt, but frankly the fake part falls away pretty quickly. Higgins's ("The Vow" series) first trade release shows different experiences within the queer community, focusing especially on intersections with other identities.
She has her share of insecurity though, and I liked that, I like that she’s not all stud and no personality.
D’Vaughn auditioned seeking motivation to come out to her religious family, while Kris hopes to find true love. And the sex scenes, I usually find them underwhelming in f/f but I thought they were pretty good here. I lost the plot a bit because the reality show wasn’t all that interesting to me, and it both seemed kinda like a confusing afterthought but also too present lol. Higgins, coming out, contemporary romance, fake dating, fat, fat main character, influencer, main character of color, reality tv, romance, romantic comedy, social media, stud, stud main character by Lesbrarians.
This dual POV romance follows D'Vaughn and Kris who are paired on a reality tv show about planning an unexpected wedding in six weeks.
The only real problems for me came from consistency issues surrounding the technical reality show aspects that I think should have been caught by an editor.
