About this deal

The Assegai can be used front and rear for a surefooted feel or as a front paired with a faster rolling rear tire. EXO is a cut- and abrasion-resistant material added to the sidewalls of many Maxxis mountain bike and gravel tires. Maxxis products are thoroughly tested in their own facilities and at their leading tyre test centres. The Maxxis Assegai tyre is named after the iron-tipped spear used by the Zulu people of South Africa.

Two 120 TPI casing layers reinforced with a butyl insert provide the enduro racer with the support and protection of a downhill tire, but in a lighter package. We aim to dispatch all bikes within 5 working days, but during busy periods we may have a few builds in the queue and could take a bit longer.Wide Trail (WT) construction optimises the tyre's tread layout and profile on today's modern, wider rims. If the item comes direct from a manufacturer, it may be delivered in non-retail packaging, such as a plain or unprinted box or plastic bag.

WT tires are optimized for an inner rim width of 35 mm, but work excellently on all rims with an inner dimension between 30 and 39 mm. Choose from the popular intermediate EXO casing, EXO + for that little bit extra protection, or Double Down and Downhill for the really rough stuff. The SilkShield layer surrounds the entire tyre from bead to bead, while the EXO layer is mounted on the sidewalls. We love the great outdoors and we want to be able to provide everything you may need to love it too!

Greg Minnaar’s signature tire – the Maxxis Assegai – provides tenacious, predictable grip across the entire profile no matter the lean angle. It feels well-damped, calm and super-stable, with no sense of nervousness or wanting to tip side to side, and whether in loose soil or hardpack, dust or grease, the MaxxGrip rubber blend here is as tenacious as anything else I’ve tried. Traditional tires are designed for narrow rims and get a too square shape on wide rims, resulting in less than optimal performance. an extremely cut-resistant and abrasion-resistant material added to the sidewalls of select mountain tyres.Fewer threads per inch means slightly less suppleness than a 120 TPI EXO casing, but this subtle difference is balanced by extra stiffness, so it’s harder to twist, burp or buckle. The Maxxis Assegai, downhill world champion Greg Minnaar’s signature tyre, was launched nearly four years ago, but it still feels a bit of a newcomer compared to the brand’s classics. A childhood spent messing about on, and then racing, BMXs eventually led to downhill and four-cross as an adult. There is arguably less of an aggressive bite than a Minion DHR II when really leant over, if you’re good enough to really throw the bike about, but it might take elite downhill skills to even sense this difference.

Maxxis Wide Trail XC tires are optimized for use with 30mm internal width rims, but they will perform well on rims as narrow as 25mm. DoubleDown tires are marginally lighter than their Downhill counterparts, but it’s really the difference in “trail feel” that sets the two apart. WT tyres are optimised for an inner rim width of 35 mm, but work excellently on all rims with an inner dimension between 30 and 39 mm. Traditional tyres are designed for narrow rims and get too square a shape on wide rims, resulting in less than optimal performance. Traditional tyres are designed around older, narrower rims and can create an overly square tyre profile, leading to less than optimal performance.
