About this deal

On several occasions, the Lijjat member-sisters have undertaken social service activities such as distributing nutritious food for poor children, donating money for conducting community marriage, instituting prize-money for spread of primary education, undertaking blood donation drive, organising health camps, plantation drives and even making donations to Government bodies. [7] In 1999, the Mumbai City felicitated Rukminiben B. Pawar, Lijjat President, as an outstanding woman in the field of social work. [39] Lijatt has blazed a trail for cooperative business models that are also professional, ethical and economically sound. In the process, the women’s organization has created generations of employees who are not just self-sufficient; they are also enriching their own lives and those of others in their communities. For the next couple of days, Padhye just practised different kinds of laughter in front of his mirror. After a few more modifications 'Karram Kurram' was added. Then the final ad was shot, weaving together Padhye's inputs. The small team did not spend resources on hiring a marketing team, publicist or workforce, and instead channelled all its energy towards ‘quality consciousness’.

Lijjat was started by seven Gujarati women from Mumbai. The women lived in Lohana Niwas, a group of five buildings in Girgaum. They wanted to start a venture to create a sustainable livelihood using the only skill they had i.e. cooking. The seven women were Jaswantiben Jamnadas Popat, Parvatiben Ramdas Thodani, Ujamben Narandas Kundalia, Banuben. N. Tanna, Laguben Amritlal Gokani, Jayaben V. Vithalani, and Diwaliben Lukka. [5] [6] On 18th June 2019 President of our Institution Smt. Swati R. Paradkar was conferred the 'Anita Parikh Empowerment of Women Award' for the year 2018-2019 by The Rotary Club of Mumbai at a function held at Taj Mahal, Mumbai. The Award was presented by Shri Vijay Kumar Jatia, President of Rotary Club, Mumbai. Not only self-employment, self-reliance, self-empowerment and self-dignity are equally important. The movement started by Shri Mahila Griha Udyog Lijjat Papad (SMGULP), represents the true strength of Indian women. The women, who are a part of Lijjat, weren’t literate before, but now they know the importance of education, especially of their children. This in itself is a big development,” says eminent scientist Raghunath Mashelkar.Lijjat started out as a cottage industry in an urban area, but spread to the rural areas. [3] It is considered one of the most remarkable entrepreneurial initiatives by women that is identified with female empowerment in India. [4] Due to standardization in the Papad, 4.8 Billion Papads made by 45,000 Lijjat sisters all over India with similar tastes. a b "Organization: Milestone". Lijjat. Indeed, since that period Lijjat has produced a number of memorable product promotion campaigns via local language newspaper advertising, TV and radio campaigns, and through industry events and fairs. With each division of the organization making proportional contributions for financing such campaigns, Lijjat has been able to reach a nationwide catchment of customers and clients. Like Paradkar, Manjula S, 44, started out by accompanying her mother to the Lijjat centre. She started officially rolling papads for them when she was 27. “The atmosphere here is amicable. There is unity among the women, who are accommodating and helpful,” she says. Likewise, the venture has consciously stayed away from brand launches, social media presence and extravagant celebrations. Their only focus is that consumers and bens are satisfied at the end of the day. Lijjat Patrika, the in-house magazine, is published and circulated for a nominal rate to those interested in the activities of Lijjat. It is published in many languages Hindi, English, Marathi, Gujarati. It has emerged as a strong mode of communication for information related to significant events and initiatives at Lijjat, in addition to presenting articles on women. [11] Started as Shri Mahila Udyog Lijjat Papad, the company is now India’s oldest all-women cooperative. Jaswantiben and six other homemakers pooled in a loan amount of Rs 80 to start off this business. The business grew organically with contributions from women in the neighbourhood. Lijjat Papad soon became a brand that supported women in achieving financial independence.Apart from its consumers, the brand has left an everlasting mark as a proud swadeshi company that has empowered thousands of lives. This papad brand has successfully managed to be a silent yet integral part of everyone’s life in more ways than one. In July 1979, the general secretary of a trade union tried to interfere in Lijjat's affairs, making certain demands on behalf of a few member-sisters. L. C. Joshi, Labour Advocate of Bombay and a well-known industrial relations expert, was called for consultations. In his observations on "Who owns Lijjat?", he clarified that member-sisters were competent to take a decision for their own and it was not open for an outside agency to interfere with the internal working of Lijjat. [14] Jaswantiben says that they sold one kilo on the first day and earned eight annas. She tells National Geographic, “Next day two kilos fetched a rupee. Women in our locality found it profitable and through word of mouth, we started building a team.” So Steve asks this question, and within some time, the entire team is absolutely clear about what exactly they were supposed to do. This inspired their “Think Different” campaign that told the world what Apple truly stood for. Chhaganlal Parekh, popularly known as Chaganbapa, became their guide. [3] Initially, the women were making two different qualities of papads, to sell the inferior one at a cheaper rate. Chaganbapa advised them to make a standard papad and asked them never to compromise on quality. He emphasised to them the importance of running it as a business enterprise and maintaining proper accounts. [10]
