About this deal

We like the well-thought-out traditional lacing system used on the Targhee III, as it employs an additional strap that locks the heel in place for a snug fit around the ankle. I'd recommend the Targhee II Waterproof[ Men's- Men's Wide- Women's] for casual use and the Targhee III Waterproof MID[ Men's- Men's Wide- Women's] for hiking out in the nature. The wide sole gives added stability, but with a pronounced rocker and sole flex, this boot did not do as well in edging tests.

With out-of-the-box comfort and an updated look, the Targhee III is a day-hiking shoe that offers good performance, especially for those who have a hard time finding a pair of shoes that will fit wider feet. On our boots, we can see a number of scuff marks around the ankle, which means the padding was well placed and doing its job.Right out of the box, this boot delivers trail-ready comfort normally reserved for well-worn boots that have seen months of use to break them in. I have come across other hikers who have had the same experience with the foot bed breaking down after a number of months.

pounds for a US men's size 11, the Targhee III Low is not the heaviest shoe in this review but is far from the lightest. Salomon’s X Ultra line of hiking footwear is one of our long-time favorites for all types of uses from day hikes to lightweight backpacking trips. Keen has updated the Targhee III Low with a soft and supple nubuck leather outer which is softer and less rigid. While the ankle is well-secured, though, the rest of the foot moves around quite easily, as it has one of the roomiest fits of any shoe we tested. The included footbed is quality, with dual density materials used and a good supportive arch, so those who fit this shoe will undoubtedly feel better support than we were able to.We still don’t recommend the Targhee III for those with narrow feet, but it should work well for medium to wide feet and those who don’t mind a little extra room. All thoughts and opinions are that of the reviewer and we are in no way influenced by the brand or company. This most certainly adds to the comfort element of the boot and may not be an issue for easy day hiking, but if you’re really pushing your footwear, a ton of roominess is not a desirable feature. She can’t get enough of being outdoors – whether that’s lounging around the campfire cooking up a feast, hitting the trail in her running shoes, or attempting to conquer the waves on her surfboard – she lives for it. It can withstand sloshing through the infrequent stream or a mud puddle, but those who spend prolonged time in wet climates where higher levels of protection are indicated should look to a boot with a taller flood level. As soon as this happens (after around 6-12 months of wear), my Achilles’ tendon starts acting up and I have to get new boots. As expected, the big old Targhee bumpers make me feel a little bit invincible when stomping along rocky trails. It’s worth noting that like many other hiking boots, the Targhee is offered in a non-waterproof Vent model for dry and warm conditions.

For comparison, the Merrell Moab 2 Mid WP is slightly heavier at 2 pounds 4 ounces, although that boot offers more in the way of stability (more on that below). A lightweight ESS shank gives the Targhee III its support, though we felt a noticeable loss of stability from previous iterations. But the Durand is burlier and more oriented for difficult trails, adds 8 ounces to the equation at 2 pounds 12. They were the first proper hiking shoes I ever owned, bought in 2005 when they’d just been released (not that I knew that at the time! Though the lugs are relatively average in terms of depth, their multi-directional placement makes them feel more aggressive than they are.
