About this deal

The most common of these disposables (at least in the United States) is the Kodak FunSaver, which also happens to be the camera that introduced me to photography.

The camera offers 27 shots, features a toggleable flash and, most importantly, produces timeless black-and-white images. And, as we in the film community like to say, film isn’t dead, and that goes for disposable cameras as well! For advanced photographers looking to simplify or get away from their complicated pro- and semi-pro cameras, I’d happily recommend the FunSaver over other often-recommended “simplify your life” cameras like the Holga or Vivitar’s Ultra Wide and Slim. As its name suggests, the Daylight is designed exclusively for outdoor photography and, as a result, comes without a flash.

Loaded with Kodak Ultra Max 800 film for clearer pictures beneath the waves, we’d otherwise advise outdoor and daylight use only. While Fujifilm released the QuickSnap in 1986 — the first 35mm camera marketed as “disposable” — Kodak quickly followed up by launching the Kodak FunSaver in 1989. The flash is also more powerful than the QuickSnap, which extends the camera’s latitude just a little bit more. This camera is a fan favorite, as the pre-loaded ISO400 Fujifilm 35mm roll film gives a suitably antique film look that will please any photography nostalgic.

Lomography prides itself on producing unusual films that give a retro look to your images - and this camera is loaded with a roll of LomoChrome Metropolis, which is designed to give moody, muted shots. Loaded with the right film, such as a chromogenic black and white emulsion, this camera seems like a great landscape or street camera with a very wide depth of field. And one of the things I love about both cameras is that they both have the instructions on the back of the actual camera. Note on this review: it reads very similar to the HD power flash because I used that review for much of the text as the cameras are nearly the same. Obviously we also have the variables of the sensitivity of the film and the built-in flash with which you can play to obtain different results.

The FunSaver does a surprisingly good job with just about any outdoor daylight scene, and can transition to indoor shots with the use of the built-in flash. They come pre-loaded with a roll of 35mm film, and the shutter speed, aperture and focus are all preset. Do not open the camera itself or touch the seals on the camera, this will cause light to leak into the camera and compromise the film. The actual view through the finder was just the window, so it appears the viewfinder is off center, and doesn’t show the whole capture area. In fact, the cameras are primarily made from plastic, metal, and batteries — all recyclable — and are designed to be easily disassembled. And perhaps that’s what makes it an overall choice — it is simply exactly what you expect and works for almost everyone’s needs.

The film is already loaded, all you do is advance the film via thumb wheel until it won’t turn anymore, then simple look through the viewfinder and take a snap. It’s waterproof down to 15m, but as it lacks a flash, we wouldn’t recommend it for any serious diving. Traveling the world with an old Afghan box camera – it is no longer just a memory of the early pioneers of the 1800s.
